Be Careful… Your Heart Is Getting Used to Ignoring God

Scripture Focus (NKJV)

“For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened… if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance…”
— Hebrews 6:4,6

Devotional

There are passages in Scripture that are meant to comfort us, and then there are passages that are meant to wake us up.

Hebrews 6 is one of those passages.

At first glance, these verses can feel heavy, even unsettling. The writer describes people who have experienced truth, who have been exposed to God’s presence, and yet reach a place where their hearts no longer respond. It raises a serious question: How does someone get there?

To understand this, we have to go back to what Hebrews has been teaching all along.

Drift.
Hardening.
Delayed obedience.
Unbelief.

None of these happen suddenly.

They happen slowly.

This passage is not describing someone who struggles, someone who doubts, or someone who is trying to grow. It is describing a person who has been consistently exposed to truth but has repeatedly chosen not to respond to it—until eventually, their heart becomes so hardened that they no longer desire to.

That is what makes this passage serious.

It is not about one mistake.
It is about a pattern.

I remember a season where I became aware of how easy it was to hear God’s prompting and delay responding. At first, it felt small. A nudge to pray that I ignored. A moment to pause that I rushed past. A conviction that I softened with excuses. But over time, I noticed something subtle beginning to change.

It became easier to ignore.

What once felt like a clear prompting began to feel quieter. Not because God stopped speaking, but because I had become less responsive.

That realization was convicting.

Because Hebrews is showing us that the danger is not that God stops reaching out to us.

The danger is that we stop responding.

And when that pattern continues long enough, the heart can become resistant.

That is what this passage is warning against.

For those of us in healthcare training, this is incredibly relevant.

We are constantly exposed to truth. We may read Scripture, listen to sermons, engage with devotionals, and even encourage others. But exposure alone does not produce transformation.

What matters is response.

The danger is not that we lack access to truth.

The danger is that we become comfortable hearing it without acting on it.

Hebrews is not trying to create fear.

It is creating urgency.

It is reminding us that our hearts are shaped by how we respond to God over time. Every moment of obedience softens our hearts. Every moment of delay, if repeated, can slowly harden them.

But here is the grace in this passage:

If you are reading this and feeling conviction, that means your heart is still responsive.

If you are aware, if you feel the weight of this, if you desire to grow—that is evidence that God is still working in you.

The door is not closed.

The invitation is still open.

The danger is not that we struggle.
The danger is when we stop responding altogether.

Today is an opportunity.

To respond again.
To soften again.
To say yes again.

Because as long as our hearts are still responsive, growth is still possible.

Reflection Questions

Have we been consistently responding to what God is showing us, or have we become comfortable delaying?

Are there areas where God’s voice has become easier for us to ignore?

What is one thing God has been prompting us to do that we have not yet responded to?

Application

Today, respond to one thing God has already been speaking to you about. Do not wait for the perfect moment or the perfect conditions. Take a step, even if it feels small. Every act of obedience softens your heart and keeps you aligned with Him.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for continuing to speak to us and draw us closer to You. Forgive us for the times we have delayed or ignored Your voice. Help us to remain sensitive and responsive to You. Soften our hearts, strengthen our obedience, and guide us in every step we take. Thank You that Your grace is still available and that You are always inviting us back into alignment with You.

Amen.
