Scripture Focus (NKJV)
“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
— Hebrews 4:16
Devotional
There are moments in demanding seasons of life when we reach the limits of our own strength. We may have studied as much as we can, prepared as thoroughly as possible, and given our best effort, yet we still find ourselves feeling overwhelmed by the responsibilities before us. In those moments, it can be tempting to retreat inward, trying to carry the weight of the journey alone.
Hebrews 4 ends with a very different invitation.
Because Jesus is our compassionate High Priest who understands our weaknesses, we are encouraged to approach God with confidence. The writer tells us that we can come boldly to the throne of grace. This statement would have been remarkable for the original readers. In the Old Testament, access to God’s presence was limited. Only the high priest could enter the Most Holy Place, and even then it happened only once each year.
But through Christ, that barrier has been removed.
The throne of God is no longer a place we approach with fear and distance. It has become a throne of grace, where mercy and help are freely given to those who seek Him.
For those of us navigating demanding careers, this truth can transform the way we approach our challenges. Instead of waiting until we have everything figured out before coming to God, we are invited to come precisely when we need help the most. We do not need to arrive with perfect faith, flawless discipline, or impressive accomplishments. We come simply as we are, trusting that God’s grace is sufficient for whatever we are facing.
The phrase “in time of need” is particularly meaningful. It reminds us that God’s help is not distant or delayed. His grace meets us exactly where we are and exactly when we need it.
When exams feel overwhelming, grace is available.
When responsibilities feel heavy, grace is available.
When we feel uncertain about the next step in our journey, grace is available.
This invitation changes the posture of our hearts. Instead of carrying our struggles in isolation, we learn to bring them directly to God. Instead of relying solely on our own understanding, we rely on His mercy and guidance.
As students and future healthcare professionals, we will encounter many situations where we feel inadequate or uncertain. Yet Hebrews reminds us that our confidence does not come from our own abilities alone. It comes from knowing that we serve a God who welcomes us into His presence and provides the grace we need for every season.
God’s throne is not a place of rejection for those who seek Him.
It is a place of grace for those who come honestly and humbly before Him.
And when we learn to approach Him boldly, we discover that the help we need is never far away.
Reflection Questions
Do we tend to approach God only after we feel prepared, or do we bring our needs to Him honestly and immediately?
What challenges in this season might we need to bring before God’s throne of grace today?
How might our confidence grow if we truly believed that God welcomes us into His presence with mercy and help?
Application
Today, take a few quiet moments to approach God in prayer with confidence. Bring before Him the specific pressures, uncertainties, or responsibilities you are carrying. Instead of trying to solve everything alone, ask Him for the grace and wisdom you need for the day ahead.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for inviting us to come boldly before Your throne of grace. When we feel overwhelmed by the challenges of our journey, remind us that Your mercy and help are always available. Teach us to rely on Your strength rather than our own and to approach You with confidence and trust. May Your grace sustain us in every season of our calling.
Amen.
