Scripture Focus (NKJV)
“And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men… for you serve the Lord Christ.”
— Colossians 3:23–24
Devotional
There is a difference between excellence and perfectionism, and confusing the two will exhaust you.
Excellence is rooted in stewardship. It asks, “How can I faithfully use what God has given me?” Perfectionism, however, is rooted in fear. It asks, “How can I avoid disappointing people?” One produces growth; the other produces anxiety.
Healthcare training quietly feeds perfectionism. Grades are visible. Evaluations are documented. Mistakes feel magnified. You begin to believe that every outcome defines you. Slowly, the joy of learning shifts into the pressure of proving.
Colossians recalibrates the entire motive structure: whatever you do, do it as unto the Lord. That phrase frees you from the invisible audience you think is constantly judging you. When your work is directed toward people, their approval becomes oxygen. When your work is directed toward God, faithfulness becomes enough.
This does not lower the standard. It purifies it.
You study diligently — not to outshine your peers, but to honor the calling entrusted to you. You prepare carefully — not because you fear embarrassment, but because stewardship matters. You correct mistakes — not because failure defines you, but because growth refines you.
Perfectionism whispers that anything less than flawless is unacceptable. Scripture reminds you that faithfulness, not flawlessness, is the goal. You are serving Christ in the lecture hall, in the lab, in the clinic, in the quiet hours of review. And Christ is not a tyrant demanding performance; He is a Lord forming maturity.
When your motive shifts, exhaustion eases. You are no longer carrying the weight of impressing everyone. You are simply walking faithfully before One.
And that is lighter.
Application
Examine your current stress. Is it coming from a desire to be faithful — or a fear of being perceived as inadequate? What would change if your work this week was offered entirely to God?
Prayer
Lord, purify my motives. Free me from perfectionism disguised as excellence. Teach me to work diligently, but peacefully. Help me remember that I serve You first, and that faithfulness matters more than flawless performance.
Amen.
Final Reflection
You are called to excellence.
Not exhaustion.
Serve well — and let that be enough.
