There’s More—And You Know It

Scripture Focus (NKJV)

“Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection…”
— Hebrews 6:1

Devotional

There comes a point in every journey where staying in the same place is no longer an option.

In healthcare training, we understand this well. We are not meant to remain at the level of introductory knowledge. What begins as foundational understanding must eventually develop into deeper comprehension, application, and confidence. Growth requires movement. It requires us to build upon what we have already learned and step into greater responsibility.

Hebrews 6 opens with this same principle—but applied to our faith.

The writer urges believers to move beyond the elementary principles and go on to maturity. This does not mean that the foundations are unimportant. In fact, they are essential. But they were never meant to be the final destination.

The problem is not having a foundation.

The problem is remaining there without progressing.

If we are honest, many of us can relate to this in our spiritual lives. We may know the basics of our faith. We understand salvation, prayer, and Scripture. We believe in God, we attend church, and we engage with spiritual content. Yet there are seasons where our growth slows, and we find ourselves circling the same level of understanding without moving deeper.

I remember a time when I realized that I had become comfortable in what I already knew. I could navigate conversations about faith, quote familiar Scriptures, and maintain spiritual routines, but I sensed that God was inviting me into something deeper—something that required more intentionality, more surrender, and more growth.

The invitation to maturity can feel uncomfortable.

Because growth always requires change.

It requires us to move beyond what is familiar.
It requires us to confront areas where we have been stagnant.
It requires us to become more intentional in our relationship with God.

For students in healthcare, this challenge is particularly relevant. Our schedules are full, our minds are constantly engaged, and it can be easy to assume that spiritual growth will happen automatically over time. But Hebrews reminds us that maturity is not passive.

It is pursued.

We do not drift into deeper faith.
We choose it.

This means that we must be intentional about building on the foundation we have been given. We must move beyond simply knowing truth to living it out more fully. We must allow God to shape not only what we believe, but how we think, how we respond, and how we live.

This does not happen overnight, and it does not require perfection.

It requires willingness.

God is not asking us to have everything figured out. He is inviting us to take the next step forward.

To grow a little deeper.
To trust a little more.
To surrender a little further.

And as we respond to that invitation, we begin to experience a faith that is not just foundational, but transformative.

We are not called to stay where we started.
We are called to grow into who God is shaping us to be.

Reflection Questions

Have we become comfortable in our current level of spiritual growth?

In what areas might God be inviting us to go deeper in our faith?

What is one step we can take to move forward intentionally in our relationship with Him?

Application

Today, identify one area of your spiritual life where you sense God inviting you to grow. This could be deepening your time in Scripture, being more intentional in prayer, or responding to something He has already placed on your heart. Take one step forward in that area, trusting that growth happens through consistent movement.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the foundation You have given us in our faith. Help us not to remain in the same place, but to grow into deeper maturity. Give us the willingness to move forward, even when it feels uncomfortable. Teach us to pursue You intentionally and to become who You are shaping us to be. Guide us as we take the next steps in our journey with You.

Amen.
