Scripture Focus (NKJV)
“Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.”
— Hebrews 7:25
Devotional
There is a quiet pressure that many of us carry, especially in demanding seasons of life, to keep everything together.
We learn how to function even when we are tired. We learn how to push through even when we feel overwhelmed. We learn how to present ourselves as capable, composed, and in control, even when internally we feel stretched, uncertain, or worn down. Over time, this becomes part of how we survive environments like healthcare training, where expectations are high and there is little room to fall apart.
But what we often do not realize is that we begin to carry that same pressure into our relationship with God.
We assume, even if subtly, that we need to come to Him in a certain state. That we should be more put together, more disciplined, more consistent before we approach Him fully. And when we feel like we are not meeting that internal standard, we hesitate. We pull back. We try to gather ourselves first.
Hebrews 7 speaks directly into that hidden pressure and offers something far more freeing.
It tells us that Jesus is able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him. This does not only speak to salvation as a one-time event, but to the ongoing, complete, and continuous work of Christ in our lives. The phrase “to the uttermost” carries the idea of being fully, entirely, and continually sustained. It means that there is no part of our lives, no season, and no condition in which His saving work does not reach.
And then it gives us the reason why.
Because He always lives to make intercession for us.
This means that at no point are we left to sustain ourselves spiritually.
Jesus is not passively observing our lives. He is actively interceding. He is continually standing in our place, representing us before the Father, not occasionally, not when we are doing well, but always. His ministry is not interrupted by our inconsistency, our fatigue, or our struggles.
I remember a season where I felt like I was barely holding things together. There was pressure academically, tension internally, and a constant sense that I needed to keep going without slowing down. And spiritually, I found myself thinking that I needed to fix how I felt before I could really come to God again in the way I wanted to.
But the truth is, I was never meant to hold myself together in the first place.
That realization shifted something in me.
Because if Christ is always interceding, then my relationship with God is not sustained by my ability to remain steady, but by His ability to remain faithful.
For those of us navigating healthcare training, this truth is deeply needed.
There will be seasons where we feel strong and focused. But there will also be seasons where we feel stretched, discouraged, and unsure. And in those moments, the temptation is to believe that we need to regain control before we can come near to God.
But Hebrews reminds us that we are invited to come as we are, not as we think we should be.
We do not come because we have everything together.
We come because He is holding everything together.
This is the beauty of the new covenant.
We are not maintaining our relationship with God through our strength. We are being sustained by Christ’s ongoing work on our behalf. He is not waiting for us to stabilize before He engages with us. He is the One who stabilizes us.
And because of that, we do not have to carry the burden of keeping ourselves together.
You are not held together by your strength.
You are sustained by a Savior who never stops interceding for you.
That means you can come honestly.
You can come tired.
You can come uncertain.
And you will still be met with grace.
Reflection Questions
Have we been feeling pressure to “hold ourselves together” before coming to God?
In what ways have we been relying on our own strength to sustain us?
How might our relationship with God change if we truly believed that He is the one holding us together?
Application
Today, come before God without trying to gather yourself first. Whether you feel strong or overwhelmed, take a few moments to sit in His presence honestly. Allow yourself to release the pressure of holding everything together and trust that He is sustaining you.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for being the One who sustains us when we feel like we are falling apart. Help us to release the pressure of trying to hold everything together on our own. Teach us to come to You honestly, trusting that You are always interceding for us. Strengthen us in our weakness and remind us that we are held by Your faithfulness, not our own strength.
Amen.
