Lay Down What’s Slowing You Down

Scripture Focus (NKJV)

“…let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.”
— Hebrews 12:1

Devotional

There are things we are carrying right now that we know are slowing us down.

Not everything is confusion.

Not everything is lack of clarity.

Some of it is weight we have simply chosen to keep holding onto.

We feel it in subtle ways throughout our day. It shows up in how easily we get distracted, how quickly our focus shifts, and how often we feel mentally scattered even when we sit down to do something important. It shows up in how tired we feel, not just physically, but internally, like our energy is being pulled in too many directions at once.

And if we are honest, not all of that weight is unavoidable.

Some of it comes from things we have allowed to stay in our lives.

For those of us in healthcare training, this can be especially challenging because our schedules are already full. We are balancing coursework, exams, responsibilities, and expectations. But in the middle of all of that, we often add more—more distractions, more commitments, more mental noise—without stopping to ask whether those things are helping us run well.

Hebrews 12 does not just tell us to endure.

It tells us to lay aside what is in the way.

That means some of what is slowing us down is not meant to be managed.

It is meant to be removed.

I remember realizing this in a very practical way when I noticed how much time and attention I was giving to things that were not actually helping me. It wasn’t anything extreme, but it was enough to divide my focus. I would sit down to study, but my mind would drift. I would try to pray, but I was already mentally exhausted. And for a while, I told myself this was just part of being busy.

But it wasn’t just busyness.

It was weight.

And I had to be honest about the fact that I was carrying things I did not need to carry.

This is where the conviction in this passage becomes clear.

Because it shifts the question from “why is this so hard?” to “what am I holding onto that is making this harder than it needs to be?”

That is not always an easy question to answer.

Because sometimes the weight is comfortable.

Sometimes it is familiar.

Sometimes it feels small enough that we convince ourselves it doesn’t matter.

But over time, even small weight slows you down.

It affects your focus.

It drains your energy.

It makes endurance harder than it needs to be.

And this race we are running requires clarity and intention.

We cannot run well if we are carrying everything.

Not everything in your life is meant to stay.
Some things are meant to be laid down so you can move forward with clarity.

This does not mean we suddenly remove everything at once.

It means we begin to pay attention.

We begin to notice what is pulling on our focus, what is draining our energy, and what is quietly taking up space that should be reserved for what matters most.

And then we make a decision.

Not to manage it better.

But to release it.

Because endurance is not just about pushing through.

It is about removing what is in the way so that we can run freely.

Reflection Questions

Are there things we are currently carrying that we know are slowing us down?

In what ways might we be adding unnecessary weight to an already demanding season?

What is one thing we sense needs to be laid aside so we can move forward more clearly?

Application

Today, identify one specific area that is pulling your focus or draining your energy unnecessarily. Take a practical step to remove or reduce it. Let that decision create space for you to move forward with greater clarity and intention.

Prayer

Lord, give us the clarity to recognize what is weighing us down and the courage to let it go. Help us to stop holding onto things that are making this journey harder than it needs to be. Teach us to run with focus, discipline, and intention, laying aside anything that stands in the way.

Amen.
