Sometimes the moment you realize you have drifted from God is the same moment shame tells you not to go back. You notice the distance clearly enough. Prayer has become something you do out of habit rather than desire, and Scripture has become content you consume rather than a voice you actually listen for. But instead of closing the gap, you stay exactly where you are, because closing it would mean admitting how far you had gone.
God’s word to His people in Malachi is not a lecture about the distance. It is an invitation.
Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the LORD of hosts.
(Malachi 3:7, KJV)
Notice what He does not require. He does not ask for a perfect account of how the drifting happened before He will consider taking them back. Even after their long pattern of wandering, God is still the One issuing the invitation to return. His invitation is not proof that you have gone too far. It is proof that He is still calling you back.
For those who belong to Christ, returning is not earning your way back into God’s acceptance. It is responding again to the grace that first brought you near. Your job was never to fix the distance before you came back. Your job is simply to come back.
Maybe you have been avoiding God because you feel guilty that you drifted in the first place, and the guilt has kept you further away than the original distance did. Let that guilt go today. You do not need a clean explanation for how you got here. You only need to turn around.
Reflect
What has kept you from returning to God, the distance itself or the guilt about how you got there?
Prayer
Merciful God, I have let distance grow between us and told myself it was too far to close. Thank You that You are still calling me back even after my own pattern of drifting. I return to You now, not with a perfect account of how I got here, but simply turning around. Meet me the way You promised You would. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Before You Go
Return to Him in one specific way today, not with an explanation, just a turn.
