Scripture Focus (NKJV)
“For whom the Lord loves He chastens, and scourges every son whom He receives… Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness…”
— Hebrews 12:6, 11
Devotional
There are moments in this journey where the weight of everything begins to feel personal.
Not just difficult, not just exhausting, but personal.
We find ourselves in seasons where things are not flowing easily, where progress feels slower than expected, and where challenges seem to stack on top of each other. And if we are not careful, we begin to interpret that experience in a way that shapes how we see God.
We start to wonder if something is wrong.
Not just with the situation, but with us.
We may not say it out loud, but internally, the thought forms: Why does this feel so hard? And sometimes, if that question sits long enough, it can quietly shift into something deeper: Is God against me?
That question does not come from a place of rebellion.
It often comes from exhaustion.
For many of us in healthcare training, this is a very real tension. The demands are high, the expectations are constant, and the pressure does not always let up. We give our time, our energy, and our focus, and yet there are still seasons where things do not come together easily. It can feel like we are being stretched in every direction at once.
And when we do not understand the purpose behind that stretching, it becomes easy to misinterpret it.
But Hebrews 12 speaks directly into this moment with clarity.
It tells us that what we are experiencing is not punishment.
It is training.
That word changes everything.
Because punishment is about paying for something.
Training is about preparing you for something.
Those are not the same.
Punishment looks backward.
Training looks forward.
And what we often experience in difficult seasons is not God trying to hold something against us, but God working something into us.
I remember seasons where I felt stretched in ways I did not expect. Moments where I had already been through delays, challenges, and setbacks, and yet I found myself facing more. It felt confusing because I thought that once I had overcome one difficulty, things would become easier.
But instead, I found myself being stretched again.
And if I am honest, there were moments where I did not immediately recognize it as training. It felt like resistance. It felt like pressure. It felt like things were not aligning the way I thought they should.
But over time, I began to see something differently.
What felt like pressure was producing endurance.
What felt like difficulty was strengthening discipline.
What felt like delay was building patience.
None of that was happening randomly.
It was forming something.
Hebrews reminds us that training is not enjoyable in the moment. It is described as painful, not pleasant. That means what we are feeling in these seasons is not a sign that something is wrong. It is often a sign that something is being developed.
And development requires resistance.
For those of us in this field, this truth is essential.
Because the kind of responsibility we are preparing for requires more than knowledge. It requires endurance, discipline, clarity under pressure, and the ability to remain steady in difficult moments. Those qualities are not formed in ease.
They are formed in training.
What feels like pressure is often preparation.
God is not working against you. He is strengthening you for what is ahead.
This does not mean we ignore the difficulty or pretend it is easy.
It means we interpret it correctly.
We stop asking, “Why is this happening to me?” and begin asking, “What is this forming in me?”
And that shift changes how we walk through the season.
Because we are no longer just enduring something.
We are being shaped by it.
Reflection Questions
Have we been interpreting difficult seasons as punishment rather than preparation?
In what areas do we feel stretched or pressured right now?
What might God be forming in us through those experiences?
Application
Today, take a moment to reflect on a current challenge and shift your perspective. Instead of viewing it as something working against you, ask what it may be developing within you. Write down one quality you believe God may be strengthening through this season.
Prayer
Lord, help us to see our difficult seasons through the right lens. Remind us that You are not working against us, but for us. Give us the understanding to recognize Your training and the strength to walk through it with purpose. Shape us into who You are calling us to be.
Amen.
