Genesis 16:7–13
“How is school going?”
“Good.”
Sometimes one word is easier than explaining everything behind it.
You smile, answer politely, and move on because the fuller version would require describing the exam you cannot stop thinking about, the pressure you do not know how to explain, the loneliness of being surrounded by people while still feeling strangely unseen.
Hagar knew something about unseen suffering.
Pregnant, mistreated, and fleeing through the wilderness, she reaches a spring alone.
There, God meets her.
And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur… And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me? (KJV)
Hagar gives God a name born directly from her encounter with Him.
Thou God seest me.
God seeing her did not make the wilderness imaginary. It did not erase the complexity waiting ahead of her.
It changed one devastating part of her suffering.
She was not unknown inside it.
There is a particular loneliness that comes from believing no one understands the weight you are carrying. Healthcare training can intensify it because the people outside your program may not understand the pressure, while the people inside it may be too overwhelmed with their own lives to recognize what is happening in yours.
You do not have to minimize that loneliness.
But do not turn human limitation into theology.
People may miss what God sees.
They may misunderstand what God knows completely.
They may never notice how much it cost you to keep going through a particular season.
None of that makes you invisible to Him.
Before Hagar had a solution, she had a revelation: Thou God seest me, here.
Sometimes that truth is not the end of the wilderness.
It is what keeps you from believing you have been abandoned inside it.
Reflect
What part of your current season has felt particularly unseen?
Where have you allowed another person’s inability to understand you to shape what you believe about God’s attention?
Who is one safe person you could allow to know a little more of the real answer this week?
Prayer
God who sees me, You know what I have carried quietly and what I have not known how to explain to anyone else. I confess that I have sometimes treated feeling unseen by people as evidence that I am unseen by You. Reveal where loneliness has distorted my understanding of Your presence. Remind me that You found Hagar in the wilderness before anyone else came looking. Today, help me rest in being fully known by You and give me courage to receive safe human support instead of hiding completely. In Jesus’ name, amen.
