Scripture Focus (NKJV)
“Remember those who rule over you, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct.”
— Hebrews 13:7
Devotional
There are more voices shaping us than we often realize, and not all of them are meant to have influence in our lives.
We move through our days listening, observing, and absorbing perspectives from different places. Some of it comes from the people around us, some from what we consume online, and some from the quiet expectations we feel in our environment. Over time, those voices begin to shape how we think, how we make decisions, and how we interpret our own journey.
It happens subtly.
We pick up on how others approach success, how they respond to pressure, and how they define progress. We begin to adopt certain patterns without fully questioning where they came from. And before long, we find ourselves navigating our path based on a mixture of influences that may not all be aligned with where God is actually leading us.
For those of us in healthcare training, this becomes even more complex. We are surrounded by high achievers, different opinions, and strong personalities, all offering perspectives on how to succeed, how to move forward, and how to handle the demands of this field. It can feel like there are many directions to follow, and without intentional discernment, it becomes easy to feel internally divided.
Hebrews 13 brings clarity to this by reminding us to be mindful of who we are following.
It does not just say to listen.
It says to remember those who have spoken truth into our lives and to consider the outcome of how they live, not just what they say. That means we are not called to follow voices blindly. We are called to observe, discern, and align ourselves with people whose lives reflect the kind of faith we are striving to walk in.
That requires intentionality.
Because not every voice that is loud is worth following.
Not every perspective that is common is meant for you.
Not every path that works for someone else is the one you are called to take.
I remember seasons where I felt pulled in different directions by what I was hearing and seeing around me. There were many opinions, many approaches, and many ways of defining success. And if I am honest, it created a sense of internal confusion because I was trying to hold onto too many perspectives at once.
But clarity began to return when I became more intentional about what I allowed to shape me.
I started to pay closer attention to the voices that were rooted in truth, grounded in faith, and consistent in how they lived. I realized that it was not just about what someone said, but about the fruit of their life. That shift helped me filter what I listened to and what I allowed to influence my decisions.
For many of us, this is where realignment is needed.
Not because we are intentionally following the wrong things, but because we have not been intentional enough about what we are allowing to lead us.
Who you consistently listen to will shape how you think.
And how you think will shape how you live.
This is not about shutting everything out.
It is about choosing wisely.
It is about making sure that the voices we follow are leading us toward clarity, not confusion, and toward truth, not pressure.
Because when the right voices are shaping us, it becomes easier to stay grounded, even in demanding seasons.
Reflection Questions
What voices are currently influencing how we think and make decisions?
Are those influences bringing clarity or creating confusion?
Who in our lives reflects the kind of faith and character we want to follow?
Application
Today, take a moment to reflect on what you are consistently listening to. Identify one voice or influence that may not be helping you stay grounded, and begin to create space from it. At the same time, lean more intentionally into a source of truth that strengthens your faith.
Prayer
Lord, give us discernment to recognize what is shaping our thoughts and decisions. Help us to be intentional about the voices we follow and to align ourselves with those who reflect Your truth. Keep us grounded so that we are not easily pulled in different directions.
Amen.
