Scripture Focus (NKJV)
“Therefore do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward. For you have need of endurance… But we are not of those who draw back to perdition, but of those who believe to the saving of the soul.”
— Hebrews 10:35–36, 39
Devotional
There are moments in this journey where quitting doesn’t look dramatic.
It doesn’t look like walking away overnight or making a big announcement that you’re done. Most of the time, it’s quieter than that. It’s the thought that crosses your mind when you’re tired, discouraged, or overwhelmed.
Maybe this is too much.
Maybe I’m not cut out for this.
Maybe I should just take a step back.
And even if you don’t act on it immediately, the thought lingers.
For those of us in healthcare training, these moments are not rare. The workload is heavy, the expectations are high, and the pressure can feel constant. There are days when you’re motivated and focused, but there are also days when everything feels harder than it should.
Days where you question yourself.
Days where you wonder if you’re really making progress.
Days where it feels like you’re giving everything… and still not where you want to be.
I remember a time where I felt that tension so strongly. I wasn’t necessarily failing, but I also didn’t feel like I was moving forward the way I expected. It felt like I was stuck in the middle—no longer at the beginning, but not yet where I thought I would be. And that middle space can be one of the most discouraging places to be.
Because it’s where the excitement of starting has faded, and the reward of finishing isn’t visible yet.
It’s where endurance is required.
Hebrews 10 speaks directly into that space.
It tells us not to cast away our confidence. Not because the journey is easy, but because what lies ahead is worth continuing toward. It acknowledges that endurance is necessary—that this walk with God and this path we are on will require us to keep going even when it feels difficult.
But it also reminds us of something powerful.
“We are not of those who draw back.”
That is identity.
That is not a suggestion.
That is a declaration of who we are.
For those of us who are in Christ, quitting is not our identity. Drawing back is not who we are. Even when we feel tired, even when we feel uncertain, there is something within us that continues to move forward—not perfectly, but faithfully.
And that matters.
Because endurance is not about always feeling strong.
It is about continuing, even when you don’t.
There will be days where you don’t feel confident.
Days where your progress feels slow.
Days where your motivation feels low.
But those days do not define the outcome of your story.
What defines it is whether you keep going.
You are not at the end of your story.
You are in the middle of it.
And the middle often feels unclear, uncomfortable, and unfinished.
But that does not mean it is failing.
It means it is still being written.
For those of us walking this journey, this is the moment to hold on.
Not because everything feels certain.
But because God is still faithful.
He has not brought you this far to leave you here.
He is still working.
He is still shaping.
He is still leading.
And your role is not to figure everything out.
It is to keep going.
You don’t have to feel strong to keep going.
You just have to not quit.
And sometimes, that quiet decision—to stay, to continue, to show up again—is what carries you further than you realize.
Reflection Questions
Have we had moments where quitting felt easier than continuing?
In what ways might we be discouraged in the “middle” of our journey?
What would it look like for us to keep going, even without having everything figured out?
Application
Today, identify one area where you feel discouraged or tempted to pull back. Instead of stepping away, take one small step forward. It doesn’t have to be big—just intentional. Let that step be your way of choosing endurance.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for reminding us that we are not those who draw back. Strengthen us in moments where we feel tired, discouraged, or uncertain. Help us to keep going, even when it feels difficult. Remind us that You are still working in our lives and that our story is not finished. Give us the endurance to continue.
Amen.
