Don’t Drift Back Into What God Brought You Out Of

Scripture Focus (NKJV)

“For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins…”
— Hebrews 10:26

Devotional

Drift doesn’t usually feel like a big decision.

It rarely starts with someone waking up and choosing to walk away from God. Most of the time, it begins quietly, almost unnoticeably, in small moments that don’t seem significant at first.

You stop responding to a prompting.
You delay something God has already made clear.
You begin to justify what you once felt conviction about.

And over time, those small moments begin to add up.

Not into rebellion overnight, but into distance.

For those of us in healthcare training, this kind of drift can be especially subtle. Our schedules are full, our minds are constantly engaged, and it becomes easy to prioritize everything else while slowly becoming less attentive to what God is doing within us.

It’s not always intentional.

Sometimes it just feels like survival.

But Hebrews 10 brings us back to awareness.

The writer speaks about willful sin, and it’s important to understand what that means. This is not about struggling. It’s not about having moments of weakness or falling short. It’s about knowing the truth and choosing, repeatedly, to move in the opposite direction without responding to conviction.

It’s not a single moment.

It’s a pattern.

And the reason this matters is not because God is looking to punish, but because unaddressed patterns begin to shape the heart.

What we consistently ignore, we eventually become comfortable with.

I remember a time where I noticed how easy it had become to push certain things aside. Not because I didn’t care, but because I had gotten used to delaying. What once felt like a clear nudge from God became something I could reason through or put off until later.

And later kept moving.

It wasn’t that I had walked away.

But I had become less responsive.

And that’s what Hebrews is warning us about.

Not to create fear, but to bring clarity.

Because when we stop responding, we slowly stop hearing the same way.

When we keep delaying, obedience becomes less natural.

When we justify what we know isn’t aligned, it becomes easier to continue doing so.

But here is the grace in this passage.

The very fact that you feel conviction means your heart is still responsive.

The very fact that this causes you to pause, reflect, or even feel a sense of discomfort means that God is still speaking to you.

This is not a message of condemnation.

It is an invitation back to alignment.

For those of us walking through demanding seasons, this is a moment to reset.

To ask ourselves honestly:

Where have I been delaying?
Where have I stopped responding?
Where have I allowed small compromises to become normal?

And then, not to sit in guilt, but to return.

Because drift happens slowly.

But so does realignment.

You don’t have to keep going in a direction you never meant to stay in.
You can respond today.

And that response doesn’t have to be dramatic.

It can be simple.

It can be quiet.

But it must be honest.

Because the goal is not perfection.

The goal is a heart that remains responsive to God.

Reflection Questions

Have there been areas where we have been delaying or ignoring what God has been prompting us to do?

In what ways might small compromises have become more normal than they should be?

What would it look like for us to respond to God today instead of postponing?

Application

Today, identify one area where you sense God has been prompting you but you have been delaying. Take a step to respond, even if it feels small. Let today be a moment of realignment.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for continuing to speak to us and draw us back to You. Help us to recognize where we have drifted and give us the courage to respond again. Soften our hearts and make us sensitive to Your voice. Lead us back into alignment, and help us to walk in obedience with You.

Amen.
