God Is Still With You in the In-Between

Scripture Focus (NKJV)

“And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light… He did not take away the pillar of cloud by day or the pillar of fire by night from before the people.”
— Exodus 13:21–22

Devotional

There are seasons in our journey that do not feel like clear beginnings or clear endings, but something in between.

We are no longer where we used to be, but we are not fully where we thought we would be either. Things feel unfinished, undefined, and at times uncertain. We are moving, but not always with clarity. We are progressing, but not always with confidence.

And that in-between space can feel uncomfortable.

It is the place where questions tend to surface more frequently. We find ourselves wondering what comes next, whether we are on the right path, and how everything will come together. It is not always a place of visible progress, which can make it feel like we are drifting rather than being led.

For many of us in healthcare training, this season is very real. We finish one phase and step into another, but there is often a gap between where we are and where we feel we should be. We may be waiting on results, preparing for the next step, or adjusting to a new level of responsibility, all while trying to stay grounded.

And in that space, it can sometimes feel like God is quiet.

Not absent.

But quiet.

However, Exodus 13 gives us a different perspective on what it looks like to be in a transition.

The Israelites were not in Egypt anymore, but they had not yet reached the Promised Land. They were in the wilderness, a place that was unfamiliar and uncertain. But even in that in-between space, God was actively present.

He led them by a pillar of cloud during the day and a pillar of fire at night.

And what stands out is this: He did not remove His presence from them.

Not in the middle.

Not in the uncertainty.

Not in the transition.

I remember seasons where I felt like I was in that kind of in-between space. I had moved forward from one stage, but the next was not fully clear yet. I was doing what I knew to do, but I did not have the full picture. And if I am honest, there were moments where I wondered if I was missing something or if I was supposed to be further along.

But over time, I began to recognize that just because I did not have clarity did not mean I did not have direction.

God was still leading me, even when I could not see the full path ahead.

For many of us, this is what we need to be reminded of.

The in-between is not a place of abandonment.

It is a place of guidance.

It may not always feel clear, but it is not empty.

God does not disappear in transition.
He leads differently in it.

Instead of showing us the entire destination, He often gives us what we need for the next step.

Instead of providing constant clarity, He provides consistent presence.

And that presence is what sustains us.

Because when we know that He is with us, we do not have to panic in the unknown.

We can move forward with trust, even if it is one step at a time.

For those of us who feel like we are in the middle of something unfinished, this truth is steadying.

You are not lost.

You are being led.

Even here.

Reflection Questions

Have we been interpreting the in-between as a lack of direction rather than a different form of guidance?

In what areas do we feel uncertain or in transition right now?

How might our perspective change if we focused more on God’s presence than immediate clarity?

Application

Today, when you feel uncertain or in between, pause and remind yourself that God is still present and leading. Instead of focusing on what you do not know, take one step forward with what you do know, trusting that He is guiding you.

Prayer

Lord, help us to trust You in the in-between seasons of our lives. Remind us that You are still present, still leading, and still working, even when things feel unclear. Give us peace in the middle and confidence to keep moving forward one step at a time.

Amen.
