Walk Into the Next Season With Confidence

Scripture Focus (NKJV)

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
— Joshua 1:9

Devotional

There comes a point in every season where we have to move forward, even if everything does not feel fully settled.

We may not have all the answers. We may not feel completely ready. There may still be questions about what lies ahead or uncertainty about how things will unfold. But the season begins to shift, and we find ourselves standing at the edge of what is next.

And in that moment, confidence can feel complicated.

Not because we do not believe in God, but because we are aware of our own limitations. We think about what we still need to learn, what we could have done better, and what might not go as planned. We look ahead and see responsibility, expectation, and the unknown, all at once.

For many of us in healthcare training, this moment is very real.

It may look like stepping into a new academic year, starting rotations, applying to programs, or preparing for something we have never done before. On the outside, it looks like progress. But internally, it can feel like a mixture of anticipation and hesitation.

We are moving forward, but we are also aware of everything we do not yet know.

Joshua 1 speaks directly into this kind of moment.

God tells Joshua to be strong and courageous, not because Joshua had everything figured out, but because God would be with him wherever he went. The confidence Joshua was being called to carry was not rooted in his own readiness. It was rooted in God’s presence.

That distinction matters for us.

Because many of us are waiting to feel confident before we move forward.

We are waiting to feel fully prepared, fully certain, fully equipped.

But that is not where biblical confidence comes from.

It does not come from having everything in place.

It comes from knowing who is with you as you step into what is next.

I remember moments where I stood at the edge of a new season and felt that tension clearly. There was a part of me that was ready to move forward, but there was also a part of me that felt aware of my gaps, my past setbacks, and the uncertainty of what was ahead. It would have been easy to shrink back or hesitate.

But what grounded me was not a sudden increase in confidence in myself.

It was a deeper awareness that God had been with me in every previous season, and He was not going to stop now.

For those of us moving into what is next, this is what we need to hold onto.

Confidence is not the absence of uncertainty.

It is the decision to move forward, anchored in God’s presence, even when uncertainty remains.

You do not have to feel fully ready to move forward.
You just have to trust that God is with you as you do.

This next season does not require a perfect version of you.

It requires a willing one.

A present one.

A trusting one.

And as you step forward, you are not stepping into something unfamiliar alone.

You are stepping into it with the same God who has carried you through every part of your journey so far.

That is where your confidence comes from.

Not in what you can control.

But in who is already with you.

Reflection Questions

Are we waiting to feel completely ready before moving forward into what is next?

In what ways have we been relying on our own sense of preparedness rather than God’s presence?

What would it look like to step into the next season with trust, even if some uncertainty remains?

Application

Today, take a moment to acknowledge the next step in front of you. Instead of focusing on what you do not feel ready for, remind yourself that God is with you. Choose to move forward with trust, even if it is one step at a time.

Prayer

Lord, as we step into what is next, help us to do so with confidence rooted in You. Remind us that we do not need to have everything figured out to move forward. Strengthen us where we feel uncertain, and give us the courage to trust that You are with us in every step ahead.

Amen.
