You Are Not Behind

Scripture Focus (NKJV)

“He has made everything beautiful in its time…”
— Ecclesiastes 3:11

Devotional

There are moments in this season where it feels like everyone around us is moving forward, and we are standing still.

We see announcements, graduations, acceptances, new opportunities, and clear next steps unfolding in other people’s lives. And even when we are genuinely happy for them, it can quietly cause us to reflect on our own position and wonder why things do not seem to be moving at the same pace.

It is not always loud.

Sometimes it is just a passing thought.

A subtle comparison.

A quiet question that lingers longer than we expect.

Am I behind?

For many of us, that question does not come from a place of laziness or lack of effort. It comes from the reality that we have been trying. We have been working, studying, applying, and doing what we know to do. And yet, when we look at where we are compared to where we thought we would be, there can be a sense of distance that is difficult to ignore.

This is especially true in healthcare training, where timelines feel structured and progress feels visible. It can seem like there is a clear sequence, and when our journey does not align perfectly with that sequence, it becomes easy to assume that something is off.

But Ecclesiastes 3 reminds us of something that brings clarity back into perspective.

God makes everything beautiful in its time.

That means there is a timing attached to what is unfolding in your life.

Not a general timing.

Not a collective timing.

A personal one.

I remember seasons where I felt this very deeply. Applying multiple times, waiting, facing delays, and watching others move forward created moments where I questioned whether I had somehow fallen off track. It did not feel like I was not trying. It felt like I was doing everything I could and still not moving at the pace I expected.

And that disconnect was hard.

But over time, I began to understand that my timeline was not broken.

It was different.

And different does not mean delayed in a negative sense.

It often means intentional.

Because God does not rush formation.

He does not skip steps.

He does not overlook the details that are shaping who we are becoming.

For many of us, the discomfort we feel is not because we are behind.

It is because we are comparing our process to someone else’s outcome.

And that comparison will always create unnecessary pressure.

Because we are measuring something God never asked us to measure.

You are not behind.
You are in the part of the process that is yours.

That does not mean it always feels good.

It does not mean it always makes sense.

But it does mean that where you are right now is not outside of God’s awareness or plan.

It is part of it.

And when we begin to trust that, something shifts.

The urgency to catch up begins to settle.

The pressure to measure ourselves against others begins to loosen.

And we are able to focus more clearly on what God is doing in our own lives, without constantly looking to the side.

Because what is being built in you cannot be rushed.

And what is meant for you will not miss you.

Reflection Questions

Have we been comparing our journey to someone else’s timeline?

In what ways has that comparison affected how we see our own progress?

What would it look like for us to trust that God’s timing for us is intentional?

Application

Today, when you notice yourself comparing your journey to someone else’s, pause and redirect your focus. Remind yourself that your path is personal and intentional. Choose to stay present in what God is doing in your life right now.

Prayer

Lord, help us to release the belief that we are behind. Remind us that Your timing is intentional and that You are working in our lives in ways we may not fully see yet. Teach us to trust You with our process and to remain focused on what You are doing within us.

Amen.
